Effective thermal expansion coefficient of three-component core-shell-matrix composites




摘要

This study reports rigorous numerical predictions of the effective thermal expansion coefficient of three-component composites consisting of spherical monodisperse or polydisperse microcapsules ordered or randomly distributed in a continuous matrix. All components were assumed to have isotropic thermomechanical properties. The effective thermal expansion coefficient was found to be independent of microcapsules' spatial distribution, size distribution, and packing arrangement. It depended solely on the core and shell volume fractions, and on the thermal expansion coefficient and bulk moduli of the constituent materials. Finally, the numerically predicted thermal expansion coefficient was compared with that predicted by effective medium approximations (EMAs) proposed in the literature for a wide range of thermomechanical properties of the three different components. The findings of this study will be instrumental in the design of composites containing microencapsulated phase change materials, such as crack-resistant pavements.
