摘要

As heat flux increases rapidly in the last two decades, many engineering systems are shifted from air cooling to liquid cooling in order to keep temperature of the chips and other electronics in the allowable temperature limits. Liquid cooling provides much more efficient and compact design for huge electronic hardware, there could be radar, electronic warfare system or data center. Therefore, in many application liquid cooling is preferred to air cooling. However, liquid cooling has more failure mechanisms compared to air cooling. In air cooling, the heart of the cooling system is the fan and heat sink. In liquid cooling, there are many components like pump, fan, heat exchanger, hoses, coupling and fitting etc. What is worse, there is a leakage problem that is the nightmare of a design engineer. There are some precautions that the engineers need to take in advance to overcome possible leakage problems. These can be preferring dielectric fluid, or indirect cooling to protect electronics at least in such an undesirable case. Every solution has its own advantages and disadvantages. A simple and applicable technique waits for development. In this study, a numerical study (CFD) is performed in order to analyze the leakage in cold plate with pressure difference monitoring at the inlet and outlet of the liquid lines while the system liquid flow rate is kept constant. First of all, a cold plate is studied in details with different leakage sizes and locations. After that, for the selected case, parallel identical cold plates are modelled and behavior of pressure drop due to leakage is examined to make meaningful interpretation about the leakage detection in order to prevent catastrophic failure.
