The behavior of fluid flowing out of high aspect ratio slots which are used as sand control apertures in both production and injection wells of the steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) process was investigated. Three component flow measurements were undertaken using both scanning (two dimensional) and tomographic (three dimensional) particle image velocimetry (PIV) to capture the complete flow field. The slots of varying aspect ratios investigated for a range of different flow rates from very low Reynolds numbers (through slots of production well) to moderate Reynolds numbers (through slots of injection well). The experimental slots were constructed at full scale and made as a three-dimensional coupon in photo-reactive resin. The three component, three dimensional (3C3D) velocity fields were collected to investigate the effect of slot geometry on the flow structures at the entrance/exit of the high aspect ratio slots. The results showed that the slot geometry highly affected flow field around the slots. Increasing the aspect ratio of the straight type slots decreased the centerline exit velocity. In lower range of flow rates (production well), the velocity profiles decreased from center of the jet toward the edge of the slot for all aspect ratios tested. In higher range of flow rates (injection well), the saddle shaped velocity profile was depicted in higher aspect ratios due to the wall effects.
