MICRO-CHANNEL COLD PLATE DIMENSIONAL PRECISION EFFECTS ON PERFORMANCE

Abstract

While manufacturing micro-channel cold plates for the purpose of electronics cooling, due to difficulties in precise dimensioning, channel sizes may not be uniform. In our case, a micro-channel cold plate is designed after several CFD simulations with the aim of maximizing heat transfer to the liquid and minimizing the pressure drop within the micro channels. Unfortunately, we observed that when we manufactured the cold plate by wire erosion, there were many dimensional differences compared to the original design. In this study, we simulate typical dimensional precision errors and evaluate their effects on heat transfer and pressure drop. The results suggest that the cause of so called micro channel effect is imprecision in micro-channel manufacturing.
