Abstract

The fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics of an in-line circular tube bank fin heat exchanger with punched curve delta-winglet vortex generators (CDVGs) were numerically investigated. The main point of this study is to disclose the roles played by CDVGs in guiding the flow and generating vortices for heat transfer enhancement. Four fin's geometry parameters such as fin pitches, circumferential position, radial position, and the height of VGs were probed to find out their effects on heat transfer performance, and the correlations of air side Nusselt number and friction factor with Reynolds numbers and four fin's geometry parameters were obtained. The results indicates that the average Nusselt number, friction factor and the intensity of secondary flow are larger than that of the counterpart plain fin geometry for a given Reynolds number, respectively. The existence of CDVGs can obviously reduce the area of wake region and significantly improve the fin's heat transfer performance in contacting with the wake region. For the studied cases, using the optimal fin's geometry parameter can make the area goodness factor achieve maximum value of 1.35 under identical pumping power constrain.
