Simulated Case Studies of Flooded Evaporators with R1234ze (and others) vs. R134a




Abstract

This lecture, using a new "fully incremental" shell-and-tube evaporator simulation code, will investigate the thermal performance differences between flooded evaporators using R134a (base case) versus new alternative refrigerants R1234ze and others). The simulations will be for enhanced boiling tube units with external and internal enhancement geometries. The influence of oil fraction on the thermal performance (heat transfer and pressure drop) will be included. The lengthwise, row-wise and local overall-U heat transfer coefficients will be presented for a completely local analysis of the thermal performance, including local dryout on the upper tube rows. A series of case studies will be presented to illustrate the comparisons between these fluids to stimulate a discussion on the replacement of R134a as the principal working fluid in such large refrigeration units.
