Transient local resolution of flow boiling in a micro channel with a pin fin




Abstract

Flow boiling around a single pin fin in microchannel was experimentally studied. Engineering fluid, HFE-7000 was used as the working fluid. Micro heater and an array of Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs) were integrated into the microchannel device to enable heating and local temperature measurements at the internal channel surface. The single pin fin is a circular cylinder with a diameter of 150 μm and a low aspect ratio H/D = 1.33, and it has the same height as the microchannel (H = 200 μm). Up to 8 RTDs (55 μm × 56 μm each) were populated around and behind the pin fin to study the effect of the pin fin to flow boiling heat transfer in microchannel, especially the wake region and vortex shedding structure behind the pin fin. Transient local heat fluxes were solved numerically based on transient local temperature distribution and applied to resolve transient local heat transfer coefficient of flow boiling.
