HEAT MASS TRANSFER ANALYSIS ON THE EFFECTS OF FOUNTAINS TO THE THERMAL COMFORT OF A SEMI-OPEN SQUARE

Abstract

Semi-open spaces alongside large commercial buildings are becoming popular features; often aim to provide semi-indoor conditions for leisure activities. Semi-open spaces are also integrated with the natural thermal flow elements of the environment. The effects of the ambient conditions and the solar radiation were the factors considered in this study to evaluate the human thermal comfort. The semi-open square of the Kaohsiung new train station under construction was treated as a micro- environment. Human thermal adaptation to shaded spaces was also considered. Natural ambient wind was adapted in the thermal analysis. This study has investigated and compared the influence of fountains on the thermal comfort of the semi-open space. The indices of standard effective temperature and mean thermal sensation vote (MTSV) were used to evaluate the thermal comfort. Droplet trajectory and velocity distribution was simulated with discrete phase model (DPM). Heat and mass transfer was calculated in couple with the surrounding flow field. Droplets distribution of the fountains was analyzed to quantify the cooling effect of fountains for the micro-environment. The simulation results show that at most unfavorable condition MTSV can decrease to 0.64 due to cooling of fountains. MTSV would reach the comfort range when the ambient conditions were more favorable. In conclusion the heat mass transfer characteristic of fountains were studied and found to be a mean of effective cooling for semi-open spaces.
