Abstract

Conventional heat transfer fluids are frequently used in a wide variety of fields. However, modern electronic devices require greater cooling abilities than that which the fluids currently in use can provide. Recently, the thermal conductivities of heat transfer fluids containing nano-scale sized solid particles have been measured experimentally. It has been observed that the addition of nanoparticles has the ability to significantly enhance the thermal conductivity of heat transfer fluids. However, the influence of nanoparticles upon the thermal conductivity of the base liquid in which they are dispersed depends upon a variety of parameters. This paper will examine existing experimental data and discuss how nanofluid thermal conductivity can be affected by base liquid, surfactant, temperature range, concentration and characteristics of nanoparticles such as material, size and shape.
