INFLUENCE OF PARTICLE SHAPE ON THE VOID FRACTION OF RANDOMLY PACKED BEDS

Abstract

The void fraction of randomly packed glass balls, clinker beads, smooth edged gravel and sharp edged broken stone particles has been determined by measuring the mass, volume and density. The sizes were in the range of 2 mm to 16 mm. Mono- and polydispersed packings were produced. The glass balls have the lowest value with 0.39. The more the shape deviates from that of the sphere, the higher the void fraction becomes, reaching a value of 0.48 for broken stone particles. Shaking reduces the void fraction between 10 % and 20 %. The higher the void fraction the stronger the influence of shaking.
