Abstract

Nanofluid is a mixture of a base liquid and nanoparticles, which may also be mixed with a surfactant to disperse the nanoparticles uniformly. The viscosity of a nanofluid has a significant effect on the fluid flow in macro/micro-channels, including pressure drop, Reynolds number, etc. The viscosity of nanofluid can be affected by differing the base liquid, temperature, surfactant, concentration, based on either volume or mass, and characteristics of nanoparticles such as material, shape and size. The purpose of this paper is to understand the effects that various parameters such as particle volume concentration, nanoparticle size, nanoparticle shape, etc. have on the viscosity of the nanofluid. This paper will also investigate the effects of temperature, base liquid, shear rate, pH level, etc. on the viscosity of nanofluids. All this will be done by analyzing and comparing previous studies on how the individual parameters have affected nanofluid viscosity.
