Abstract

A transient spreading resistance expression is obtained by solving the heat equations in a coated cylindrical flux tube with a constant heat flux circular source applied to the surface. The flux tube is semi-infinite. The resulting expression is a function of constriction ratio and time. The case of multiple coatings is considered and a general approach for calculating transient spreading resistance from a constant heat flux circular source is provided. For short times, the dimensionless transient spreading resistance is proportional to the spreading resistance in the top coating. For long times, the dimensionless spreading resistance approaches the values of the steady-state expressions in the literature. This expression is relevant to a variety of thermal transport problems.
