要約

Instabilities in a boundary layer flow over concave surfaces can be driven centrifugal effect. This effect is of interest as it can be used for the creation of streamwise vortices, known as Goertler vortices. These vortices are counter-rotating and they distort both the hydrodynamic and thermal boundary layer profiles, creating two characteristic regions: the upwash region and downwash region. In the upwash region the low-velocity fluid is pushed away from the wall and in the downwash region the opposite occurs. In the present study the hydrodynamic and thermal boundary layer are analyzed by means of Spatial Direct Numerical simulations. A variation of wall curvature is considered to examine the development of the Goertler vortices and their influence on heat transfer enhancement. The geometry analyzed considers a concave region followed by a convex one with the same radius. The results show that in the convex region the Goertler vortices move away in reference to the wall. This process may be used to effectively control heat transfer rates. It is also possible to control the growth of the Goertler vortices itself if nonlinear effects are not high.
