Experimental investigation on the effect of a novel finned tube generator on the enhancement of a solar powered refrigerator using NH3-CaCl2 working pair and activated carbon

An experimental investigation is conducted on an intermittent solar refrigerator to compare the impact of a novel stainless steel finned tube generator and a hollow non-finned cast iron generator on the initial required heat flux as well as the evaporator cooling temperature. The study showed that the maximum surface temperature reduction is 2.084 times lower in case of stainless steel finned tube generator; while the cooling power of the evaporator remains constant making a total temperature difference of almost 24°C under different weather conditions. In addition, the maximum system's empirical coefficient of performance (COP) was estimated 0.3 and 0.93 for the system equipped with hollow non-finned cast iron and finned stainless steel generators, respectively. It was found from the experiment that the structure of the generator and its absorption bed (equipped with a mixture of CaCl2 and activated carbon) has a higher impact on the pressurization of refrigerant (ammonia) and deduction of the initial required heat input than the generator's material type. The empirical results showed that the optimization of generator and its absorption bed structure leads to improved heat transfer rate and better absorption and desorption of the refrigerant, making the system an efficient device for applications under dusty or unclear weather conditions.
