Waste heat recovery systems are used to convert unused heat to other forms of usable energy. One method is to use the exhaust energy in power generation systems to generate a cooling effect. For example, a turbocompression cooling system (TCCS) uses low grade waste heat to power a recuperative Rankine cycle that directly drives the compressor in a vapor compression cycle. The evaporator of the vapor-compression cycle generates a cooling effect used to off-set cooling loads, produce air conditioning, or satisfy other cooling needs. In the present study, experimental results from a TCCS designed to offload cooling requirements in a Natural Gas Combined Cycle power plant are presented. These data will be used in future efforts to validate a system model that predicts its performance, which will provide insight to predict the TCCS performance at cooling loads required at full power plant scales.
