WORKING FLUID SELECTION AND TECHNOECONOMIC OPTIMIZATION OF TURBOCOMPRESSION COOLING SYSTEMS
要約
The wide availability of low grade waste heat streams provides an opportunity to reduce energy consumption and improve efficiencies in a number of different applications using thermally activated cooling systems. The current study investigated the effects of working fluid selection on a turbocompression cooling system that utilizes low grade waste heat available in diesel engine coolant. A coupled thermodynamic, heat transfer, and cost model was developed to better understand technoeconomic performance of the system. The simple payback period of the system was minimized for a specific design condition using a search and find optimization technique. In addition, a sensitivity study was performed to determine which heat exchanger effectiveness had the largest influence on payback period. The optimization routine was performed with a number of different working fluids, including low Global Warming Potential fluids, to find an overall minimum payback period. Of the fluids examined, it was found that a turbocompression cooling system with R600a as the working fluid had the minimum simple payback period (1.86 years) with an initial capital cost of $201,432. In this system, the payback period was most sensitive to the two-phase region of the power cycle condenser.
