要約

Due to their high reliability, efficiency and safety advantages over other transportation methods, pipelines are widely used for conveying fluids from one location to another, especially for long-distance transportation. While poor pipe welding, internal and external corrosions, and manufacturing defects may lead to pipeline leakages, which cause significant loss to the company and pollution to the environment. The early detection and accurate evaluation including the location, size and severity of pipeline leakage would enable the operator to respond quickly and can reduce the possible cost and damages caused by leakages. Generally, pipeline leakage detection methods can be mainly divided into direct observation detection, physical inspection methods and mathematical models. Based on comparing the advantages/disadvantages of each detection, a systematic instruction is proposed to choose the proper method for estimating the location and severity of leakage in different scenarios. Finally, it is found that the mathematical model has the advantage to greatly narrow down the possible leakage range by introducing dimensionless parameters, then the physical inspection method can be used to locate the leakage accurately and evaluate severity confidently. In addition, this systematic instruction provides a practical and economical approach to select right technique considering the costs of installation, operation, and maintenance. The real-time surveillance and estimation of pipeline leakage based on this systematic instruction can also improve the efficiency and reliability of pipeline operating.
