要約

Phase change materials (PCMs) have the advantage of storing latent heat at constant temperature and can possess higher energy storage densities in comparison to materials storing sensible heat. Due to these features, latent heat Thermal Energy Storage (TES) devices using PCMs are widely used to store heat in thermal systems. The aim of this study is to experimentally investigate the performance of water PCM in an improved milk storage cooling cycle integrated with a TES device. In this prototype, water is used as the PCM media which serves as both the PCM and HTF in a direct TES device. The system is designed based on an energy analysis to cool 100 litres of milk from 35 °C to 4 °C and keep it at this temperature for 48 hours before it is collected. The TES device contains 27 meters of R404 refrigerant pipes with water passing through baffles. Performance of the cooling system is experimentally investigated for both freezing (charging) and melting (discharging) of water PCM inside the device. Ice formation around cooling coils and temperature variations in TES device and milk silo are recorded. Also, energy consumption during charging and discharging modes are separately reported. Based on the results, 11.52 kWh is used to form 60 mm of ice around cooling coils of TES device in 225 minutes and 2.42 kWh is required to reduce the milk temperature from 35 °C to 4 °C three times with one charging of TES device. Finally, a parametric study is performed for two different pump massflows at 11.1 and 8.3 L/min and the results are reported.
