Light absorption using plasmonic nanofluid for volumetric solar collector

A volumetric solar collector is different from conventional surface-based solar collectors in a way that it eliminates the need of additional absorbing mechanism such as black absorbing plate. The absence of black absorbing plate is beneficial to the overall device efficiency since the radiation loss originating from heated black surface would decrease greatly. In order to make full use of this advantage, volumetric solar collector should be accompanied with heat transfer fluid that can effectively absorb sunlight, and plasmonic nanofluid is suggested as a promising candidate. Plasmonic nanofluid stands for the fluid that contains nano-sized metallic particles supporting localized surface plasmon resonace (LSP). LSP is a collective oscillation of electrons occurring at the surface of metallic particle whose size is smaller than the wavelength of incident light. When LSP is excited, strong enhancement of light absorption and scattering of light by the particle is observed. The plasmon raises the temperature of the particle and eventually the base fluid in which the particle is dispersed. In this study, plasmonic nanofluid based on gold nanorod is employed, and its light absorption capability was investigated using theoretical and experimental method.
