Analysis of Film Condensation Air-cooled Heat Exchangers with Non-Circular Plain Tubes


Air-Cooled condensers are becoming increasingly popular in power generation systems due to the significant reduction in water usage. A representative theoretical and numerical model to predict the laminar film condensation in non-circular cylinders undergoing crossflow convective cooling is proposed. In the present study, the geometric profile of the tube is defined by a cubic Bezier curve using the control points as input parameters. The laminar film condensation occurs inside the inclined tubes and is modeled as stratified multiphase flow. The air-side flow is numerically simulated using ANSYS Fluent and the calculated surface heat transfer coefficient is coupled to the condensation domain using a heat transfer resistance analog. It is observed that the overall heat transfer coefficient of the system can be enhanced by these non-circular cross sectional geometries while simultaneously reducing the pressure drop of the air side flow. Optimized designs are proposed for various steam side mass flow rates and tube inclination angles.
