Gas-Gas Heater (GGH) is a heat exchanger usually used in a desulfurization system in a coal power plant. And GGH, many wavy channels called corrugated heating elements are used for effective heat transfer between working gases. Although several researches have been carried out to increase the performance of a heating elements, few studies have examined the efficiency of overall GGH system and heating element in a combined manner. Therefore, it is required to develop a design methodology to deduce optimal heating element to enhance thermal performance while satisfying operating condition of GGH. In this research, we conducted a computational simulation to optimize a L-type heating element widely used in an operational GGH. Ansys CFX was adopted with the shear stress transport Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes model for simulation. The Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) Design and Multi Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA) were utilized as design of experiment and optimization method respectively. Objective function for optimization was system performance and variables were geometry of heating element such as angle and pitches. The results showed that pressure loss was decreased and efficiency was enhanced in an optimal design deduced the response surface.
