Resumo

With the increasing prevalence of encapsulation of phase change materials (PCMs), it may be possible to increase both heat transfer and thermal energy storage density by use of a packed bed style heat exchanger (PBHX). This heat exchanger would use a bed of stationary PCM particles in contact with a heat transfer fluid to allow very effective heat transfer. However, convenient modelling capabilities are required to optimize both the packed bed and PCM particles in order to achieve these performance increases. A first step in development of a quick to run modelling tool is demonstrated using the open-source OpenFOAM framework. The solver development process outlined can allow optimization a PBHX requiring minimal simulation setup and computational time. With future model validation it is expected that this freely distributed solver will serve as a tool for the development of complex packed bed designs featuring PCM.
