Resumo

The closed Brayton cycle is a promising power conversion system with high efficiency, safety, and low emission for a stable heat sources. However, the working fluid in a closed Brayton cycle will greatly affect the size and performance of the system. Considering this aspect, a closed Brayton cycle with helium and xenon mixture as working fluid for a space nuclear reactor is proposed. It not only can decrease the stage number of turbomachinery, but also could be used as the coolant of a nuclear reactor due to the high heat transfer coefficient. In this paper, a closed Brayton cycle model is established based on the IpsePro platform in order to investigate the system performance with helium and xenon mixture, and the cycle performances of the mixture with different fractions are compared based on the simulation model. The effect of the working fluids on the thermodynamic performance was investigated. The results show that the xenon fraction of the mixture has a great influence on the cycle performance. Moreover, the operating parameters, including pressure ratio, TIT, pressure loss, recuperator effectiveness, on the system performance was also investigated. The results show that the performance of the closed Brayton cycle is maintained by keeping proper operating parameter and the size of the power system is reduced by means of mixing appropriate xenon with helium. It is a suitable power conversion system for the space power system.
