Resumo

As the electronic components are getting smaller, then heat flux increases rapidly which results in shifting cooling from air to liquid in order to keep the temperature of the chips and other electronics in the allowable temperature limits as well as satisfying the required thermal performance. Liquid cooling provides much more efficient and compact design for huge electronic hardware, these could be radar, electronic warfare system or data center. Therefore, in many applications liquid cooling is preferred to air cooling. However, everything is no good as planned at the beginning. Liquid cooling has many failure mechanism compared to air cooling. In air cooling, the heart of the cooling system is the fan and heat sink. In liquid cooling, there are many components, which are pump, fan, heat exchanger, hoses, coupling, and fitting etc. What is worse, there is a leakage problem that is nightmare of a design engineer. As the complexity of the design increases, then the leakage detection cannot be easily done or observed until a catastrophic failure takes place. There are some precautions that the engineers can take in advance to overcome possible leakage problems. These can be preferring dielectric fluid, or indirect cooling to protect electronics at least in such an undesirable case. Humidity sensors are also used to detect leakage as the sensor gets wetted, it gives warning signal. Whatever you do may not be enough to detect very small rate leakage. In this study, first of all, we have created an equivalent and simple model to study instead of very complex cold plate geometry and experimental set-up is prepared for this purpose. After that an experimental study is performed in order to analyze pressure drop variation as there is leakage in the cold plate. Leakage is activated by screwing or unscrewing in the test set- up. In the experiment, two identical high sensitive pressure/temperature transducers are used and all data are recorded with respect to time. It is know that temperature is very effective in pressure drop because dynamic viscosity (µ(T)) directly plays an important role in the pressure level. In this study, behavior of pressure drop due to leakage is examined in detail to make meaningful interpretation about the leakage detection in order to prevent catastrophic failure. Interesting results are obtained and shared in this study.
