Resumo

The field of heat transfer in Mechanical Engineering involves abstract concepts which cannot be easily seen or felt. To address this problem in teaching undergraduate students, hands-on workshops have been added to typical lecture style classes to help the students correct their misconceptions. Videos have been used to simplify the data acquisition so the students can still see measurements in real time while feeling the heat transfer processes, but without worrying about attaining good data. Initial results of two of these combined video and hands-on workshops have shown a marked improvement in the students' conceptual understanding of the topics covered. Additional topics are being implemented along with further testing of the student outcomes. Limitations of student ability to extend conceptual understanding to more complex problems and problem solving are also being addressed.
