Immiscible Displacement in a Partial Porous Channel using the Lattice Boltzmann Method

DOI: 10.1615/TFEC2017.mst.018083
pages 2899-2906

In this article, the LBM with the pseudo-potential model is used to study the fingering characteristics during the immiscible displacement process in a partial porous channel. A two-phase flow in a square cavity and a single channel two-phase displacement were used to validate the numerical model. The porous part of the channel is reconstructed using the quartet structure generation set (QSGS) method. The viscosity ratio between the displaced and displacing fluids, the interfacial interaction force, the surface wettability and the porosity of the porous media were studied in this article. The results show that fingering increases with increasing the viscosity ratio, fluid-fluid interaction force and fluid-solid interaction force. This leads to less efficient displacement process with more un-displaced fluid inside the porous region. It was also observed that more displaced fluid remains trapped inside the porous region when the porosity decreases.
