The basement of the French metropolitan territory has widened from about 500,000 underground cavities which are divided into natural cavities (karsts) and artificial (mines, caves, war sapping, etc.). Among these, there are probably more than 100,000 mines. Some of them that are shallow are of particular interest because they are scattered in the country (mainly limestone or chalk regions) and they were mostly abandoned. In this work, we try to valorize these cavities that can be naturally semi-flooded. The motivation is to store heat, produced in summer by factories or harvested by solar panels, in the ground water for further use in the winter. The walls of the basement are used as natural insulation. The work has two parts: a theoretical and numerical model for simulating balance between hot water and rock, and for the determination of water temperatures in the seasonal cycles of charge and discharge. The model consists of a partially porous medium saturated with a liquid phase at the bottom, and the air above. A flow of hot water is injected (the same quantity of cold water is removed at the same time) in summer, and vice versa in winter. On the other hand, an experimental part has been established. The chosen area is that of Picardie. It is composed of the pumping installation, temperature, pressure, humidity sensors, and flow measurement. The work is ongoing. The results of numerical simulations show temperature stratification in the form of hot water bubble, which remains almost motionless.
