Total Entropy Production in Flow and Heat Transfer for Evaluation of Performance of Heat Transfer Devices

摘要

This study establishes the important criterion to evaluate the performance of heat transfer devices which may have different heat transfer fluids, heat transfer enhancement measures, and thus incurring different heat transfer performance and pressure losses. It is common that heat transfer enhancement is made possible at the expense of increased pressure loss. In order to connect the gain of heat transfer enhancement and the loss due to increased pressure loss to form one unified standard of performance evaluation, the entropy production rates in fluid flow and heat transfer processes are linked together. A system that yields minimum entropy production should be optimal. Based on the concept, examples of heat transfer enhancement effectiveness, selection of fluids for heat transport in solar thermal power plant are provided in the paper. The study is expected to provide a universal tool for engineers to evaluate and optimize the performance of heat transfer devices.
