TRANSIENT MODELLING OF THREE ZONE HEAT EXTRACTION FROM A SALT GRADIENT SOLAR POND

In this work, a solar pond with heat extraction from the non-convective layer, storage layer and the ground beneath is studied in the transient state. Numerical solutions of the governing, coupled partial differential equations have been obtained which are then used to evaluate the transient efficiency for a one-year period. The work reveals that the optimum non-convective layer thickness that yields maximum annual transient efficiency depends on extraction mass fluxes. Further, the effect of ground conditions on the three-zone extraction solar pond is seen with respect to six different kinds of soils, among which dry clay is found to be the one associated with maximal efficiency. Finally, the general model is used to compare the outputs of different possible extraction modes by eliminating one or more zones' extraction. While the three-zone extraction is most befitting, in case of two zone extraction, storage plus non-convective zone turns out to be a better alternative than storage zone plus ground. The reasons for why the non-convective zone yields more output than ground are also discussed in extensive detail.
