SPRAY FLAMES OF THREE-COMPONENT FUEL BLENDS IN A POROUS MEDIA BURNER AT LEAN CONDITIONS

Abstract

Butanol and soy methyl ester are attractive alternate fuels that can be produced from renewable energy sources. Spray flames of blends of Jet-A, SME and butanol were studied in a porous-media combustor. The spray was formed by atomizing the liquid fuel in a swirl air-assist atomizer and injected into a coflow of hot air. The mixture then passed through two porous media and was ignited downstream. The flow rates were adjusted to maintain a constant equivalence ratio of 0.6 in the fuel-lean regime. Measurements of the volumetric concentration of CO, CO2 and NOx in the exhaust were carried out with sampling and gas analyzers. The in-flame temperature profiles were measured using an R-Type thermocouple. The blue region in the flames increased with the oxygen content in the fuel. The CO and NO emission indices were comparable in all the flames. Peak temperature was recorded at 25% flame height near the flame axis. The measurements highlighted the effectiveness of the porous media in the spray evaporation and mixing, and the impact of fuel-bound oxygen in soot reduction.
