Abstract

The process of unsteady cooling of high-temperature bodies in liquids is used in numerous applications, such as metal processing in metallurgy and post-accident cooling at nuclear power plants. Initial temperatures of cooling bodies under such conditions are usually much higher than the critical temperature of liquid, so the main cooling mode is a low intensive film-boiling regime. The purpose of current work is to demonstrate an influence of physical properties of cooling bodies on unsteady film boiling. As test section, we used stainless steel spheres with different surface treatment. The quenching experiments were performed in ethanol and liquid nitrogen. The liquids were at different temperatures. The experiments allow to obtain cooling thermograms and to calculate heat transfer coefficient. The results of the study demonstrate complex influence of surface properties on cooling process. We can postulate that a coefficient of thermal activity of material and surface relief have the strongest impact on the incipience of high intensive boiling mode.
