THE CFD SIMULATION OF COMPLEX TUBE BUNDLES; SPECIAL FOCUS ON TURBULENCE MODEL IMPLEMENTATION
Abstract
The simulation of tube-bank accompanied by serrated fins can be considered among complex simulations. So far, many numerical approaches have been taken to simulate the flow fields over various tube-bank types. Still, there is no specific paper to study the best choice among various available turbulence models specifically. This work investigates three different RANS models to simulate the flow over tube-bank with serrated fins. In other words, these three turbulence models are considered to calculate the heat transfer and pressure drop in the solution domain. Following the above topic, a real scale HRSG tube bundle is selected, and the numerical investigation will take place to extract the correlations of pressure loss and Nusselt number. The results will compare with some available empirical correlations to find the accuracy of those empirical correlations widely used to obtain the thermo-hydraulic specifications of fluid flow in industrial tube bundles. The mean Navier-Stokes equations and the mean energy equation are discretized suitably using the finite-volume method. The
periodic boundary conditions are appropriately applied on certain boundaries of this domain to avoid duplication of geometry and reduce the imposed computational cost. It will be eventually concluded among those selected turbulence models; the k-w SST showed the best agreement with expected results in terms of pressure loss and Nusselt number. The actual scale tube bundle correlations will be obtained and compared with the empirical correlations by benefiting this turbulence model. The outcomes showed that nearly all experimental correlations
do not correctly respond to fin geometry specs' variation.
