Experimental Investigation of Heat Transfer of Al2O3 Nanofluids in Pool Boiling

Abstract

Pool boiling is considered as a significant heat transfer process with huge benefits in industrial thermal applications such as cooling of nuclear reactors, thermal desalination, refrigeration systems. Recent efforts to enhance the pool boiling process showed a new effective way which is by using nanofluids. This study reports an experimental investigation on the heat transfer performance of Al2O3 nanofluids in pool boiling. The mixture of ethylene glycol (15 %) and distilled water (85%) is selected as a base fluid as it is widely used in heat transfer applications due to its thermophysical properties such as boiling and freezing points. Nanofluid samples of two concentrations (0.01 and 0.05 vol.%) were prepared. The tests are carried out and the results are analyzed regarding the enhancement of critical heat flux (CHF), the peak heat flux under which a boiling surface can sustain nucleate boiling, compared to the base fluid. The results demonstrated a good enhancement of CHF for Al2O3 nanofluids up to 60% at 0.05 vol.% particles concentration.
