Abstract

Solar-Assisted-Heat-Pump Domestic-Hot-Water systems (SAHP-DHW) combine the use of solar-thermal collectors (STC) with Heat Pumps (HP) to heat water for use by the occupants of a building. This work implements a performance map of a custom variable-speed HP model and builds on the control development presented in two separate works by the same authors. The work explores the annual performance of a SAHP-DHW system under a control scheme with various options. The system is simulated using an experimentally validated TRNSYS model, incorporating the custom HP "Type". DHW draws are simulated using an experimentally determined draw profile taken from the literature. A series of parametric studies are conducted to determine the most advantageous system configuration varying controller parameters that set the availability of operating modes including Heat Exchanger, Heat Pump, and Auxiliary Heat modes. System performance is characterized using the following metrics: Solar Fraction, Quantity of Solar Energy collected, Quantity of Purchased Energy Consumed. In addition, the adequacy of the system is characterized by monitoring the outlet temperature of the DHW system and maintaining a count of both the mass of water drawn from the system and the number of events during which the DHW water temperature fell below 35°C.
