Abstract

As internal combustion engine vehicles evolve into electric vehicles, thermal management systems become more complex and increasingly important. In this study, the thermal and hydraulic performance of the offset strip fin heat exchanger (OSFHX) is experimentally investigated to confirm its feasibility as an EV heat pump outdoor unit. The OSFHX is a heat exchanger that can be used in secondary loops, and the overall structure can be more compact than conventional radiators. This can help improve heat pump performance by reducing the length of the loop and reducing the amount of refrigerant charge. When the OSFHX is used as a condenser, the performance under cooling conditions of electric vehicles was analyzed. As a result of the condensation performance experiment of OSFHX, it was found that power electronics (PE) occupies an average of 66.1% of the total heat transfer rate. Offset strip fins are also applied with perpendicular flow to improve heat transfer performance. The effect of this offset strip fin was confirmed through a comparative experiment. With this experiment, heat exchanger with offset strip fins showed a 28.7~81.3% increase in heat transfer rate per area compared to the plate heat exchanger.
