Evaluation of Several Types of High Temperature Heat Transfer Fluids for Concentrated Solar Power System

Abstract

This study evaluates the cost effectiveness of several eutectic chloride molten salts as heat transfer fluids (HTFs) and thermal storage media. The exergy loss from the heat transfer system in a concentrated solar power (CSP) plant due to the use of different types of molten salts and the associated loss of profit, as well as the cost of molten salts for thermal storage are considered for evaluation of the cost-effectiveness of the HTFs. In the exergy analysis, the entropy production rates from heat transfer processes of a CSP plant, including heat obtainment from solar concentrator and heat delivery to thermal power plant, and from the pressure loss in the HTF circulation are considered together. The study is important to the selection of an optimum HTF (from many candidates) with overly consideration of the material cost as well as the heat transfer performance and pressure loss in the system.
