NUMERICAL STUDY OF HEAT TRANSFER IN LIVING TISSUES DURING HYPERTHERMIA TREATMENT OF CANCER

In the current study, the thermal characteristics of human healthy and cancerous tissues during magnetic nanoparticle hyperthermia treatment are investigated numerically. A transient multi-layer three-dimensional numerical model is developed using ANSYS-FLUENT. The effects of different parameters such as the therapeutic heat generation rate as well as different cooling conditions on the temperature distribution of the tumor and normal tissues are studied. The results demonstrate that by using therapeutic heat generation rate of 3.97×105 W/m3, it takes around 2 minutes for the tumor to reach the therapeutic temperature range. While, this time is almost 5 minutes for the heat generation of 1.95×105 W/m3. It was also shown that the cooling conditions did not affect the tumor temperature during the treatment. However, significant impacts are observed on the temperature of the normal tissues as the distance from the tumor increases.
