Resumo

The knowledge of heat transfer is imperative in designing heat transfer equipment. Therefore, convective heat transfer coefficients are calculated to design and size any type of heat exchanger. A number of analytical and experimental studies have been conducted to study the heat transfer characteristics of tubular heat exchangers. However, limited work is found in the literature regarding the heat transfer characteristics of plate heat exchangers. Therefore, in the present study, experiments were performed to obtain the heat transfer data for single phase flow (water-to-water) in a commercial plate heat exchanger for symmetric 30°/30° chevron angle plate configuration. The experiments were carried out for Reynolds number ranging from 500 to 2500 and Prandtl number from 3.1 to 8.1. Experimental results showed significant effect of Reynolds number on heat transfer coefficient. Based on the experimental data, an empirical correlation to estimate Nusselt number as a function of Reynolds number and Prandtl number has been proposed.
