NOVEL CONCEPT OF FLUIDIZED BED MUFFLER WITH HEAT RECOVERY

Resumo

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration report, total U.S. primary energy consumption in 2016 was about 97.4 quadrillion Btu. 29% of that energy can be attributed to transportation sector. About 33% of energy used in a vehicle is lost with exhaust gases. Recovery of this lost energy in form of low temperature heat is not feasible due to several barriers such as lack of data, strict regulations for both emissions and manufacturer specifications, appropriate technical solutions. The presented advanced technical solution for novel concept of muffler-heat exchanger is based on using the fluidized bed acoustic properties and efficient heat recovery potential. Reviewed studies on the interaction of the acoustic wave and fluidized bed clearly demonstrated the significant heat transfer performance improvement in the fluidized bed while reducing the minimum pressure required for initial fluidization. Thus, integration of the muffler and FB-exchanger is anticipated to provide a double effect such as noise reduction by fluidized bed and heat transfer improvement via acoustic wave absorption.
