EFFECT OF WATER CONTENT ON VISCOSITY OF IONIC LIQUIDS BASED NANOFLUIDS
Resumo
The purpose of this project is to investigate the effect of water content on the viscosity of ionic liquids-based nanofluids to be used in a solar thermal system. 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C4mim][NTf2]) and 1-Hexyl-3-methylimidazoliumbis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C6mim][NTf2]) served as the base fluids. From these ionic liquids, solutions with mole fractions of water ranging from 0.14 to 1.00 were created. Both of the base ionic liquids indicated that viscosity generally decreased with an increasing water mole fraction. [C6mim][NTf2] appeared to be less responsive to the addition of water. Ionic liquids-based nanofluids created using [C4mim][NTf2] and Al2O3 at 1% wt. indicated a large sensitivity to water content. In water + NEIL solutions, viscosity appeared to significantly increase with an increasing mole fraction of water as a result of the instability introduced by the Al2O3 nanoparticles.
