Resumo

The disadvantageous temperature abnormalities associated with the large heat dissipation when operated under extreme working conditions necessitated the better thermal management to improve safety and performance. Also, limitation of mainstream cooling system, exhausting reserve of mainstream working fluids have attracted researchers to explore alternate working fluids and mini-scale components to enhance thermal performance. The present simulation investigates the thermal performance of supercritical carbon dioxide flowing inside the rectangular microchannel heat sink. Three different configuration of microchannel: Case 1(plane rectangular microchannel), Case 2(finned microchannel with fins in upstream domain only) and case 3(microchannel comprising of fins in complete domain) have been studied. It is observed that the heat transfer performance for case 3 is significantly higher compared to the case 1 as well as case 2. The results showed a maximum improvement of 55.87 % in heat transfer coefficient for case 3. This is due to the overall enhanced mixing in the presence of micro-fins. Moreover, pressure drop for case 3 is reported to be highest compared to case 2 as well as case 1. This is due to the flow obstruction created by the internal fins. At higher Reynolds number, increment in heat transfer coefficient becomes less significant for both case 2 and case 3. The present paper explores the feasibility of sCO2 as coolant which can potentially solve many of the technical limitations of conventional system, such as higher heat transfer coefficient, low viscosity, less detrimental to environment and low cost.
