Resumo

In this work, the monthly variations of heat and mass transfer and the base heat losses in an improved design of basin type solar still with multiple floating porous absorbers have been analyzed with the help of the results obtained from the year round experimental study. It was observed that the better absorptivity and the low thermal inertia of the floating porous absorbers resulted in appreciably higher surface temperatures as compared to that of the conventional basin type still giving higher evaporative heat transfers in all the twelve months. Moreover, the relatively cooler basin water of the improved still caused lesser base heat losses. In case of the modified still, a yearly average of 15.3% of the total heat was calculated to be lost through the base, which comparatively was considerably higher at 46.6% for the conventional still. The porous absorbers perform better on the clear sunny days than on overcast sky condition as they are sensitive to the varying sky condition which is also the reason for quicker start-up. It was found that the difference between the daily evaporative heat transfers of the modified and the conventional still was maximum in the month of May whereas it was minimum in the month of July. The efficiencies of the modified and the conventional stills were highest at 52% and 34% respectively in the month of May whereas the lowest efficiencies of 32% and 20% respectively were obtained in the month of December.
