Resumo

As energy crisis, climate change, ozone depletion, global warming, and oil price fluctuation continue to increase; the use of renewable energy will become an increasing trend that will affect the next generation of society. However, there is still not enough general understanding about the benefits of using clean energy sources. There is a need to educate communities about sustainable energy to reach a large audience in inventive and effective ways. In this paper, wind energy experiments that can be introduced to Clean Energy Systems classes are described. Three set of variable were examined; number of blades, wind speed, and pitch angle for two different type of blades. How power generation differs from one wind speed to another along with change in number of blades and pitch angle for a given geometry is described. Students performed experimental procedures explained and gained the conceptual understanding of the wind energy better. As the number of blades after adding more than three blades increased, the power generation decreased. As the wind speed increase, the optimal pitch angle needs to be decreased. Therefore, it is significant to see the effect of all variables to the maximum extracted power. The investigations required student explanation of the question, method, display of data with the critical response from peers.
