Resumo

Both smart phones and tablet computers are widely used in modern life. However, such devices might catch fires accidentally and even explode by themselves. Thermal fire hazards of smart phones and tablets are suspected to come from the lithium-ion batteries and the associated electric protection circuit. The consequence can be very hazardous in crowded train cars which allow charging of phones. In this study, a total of five sets of experiments for smart phones and tablets were carried out under the conditions of normal charging, overcharging and with covering by thermal insulation materials. When the temperature of the battery exceeds the limit of 45°C, the internal protection device would be activated to provide safety precautions. Users are advised to disconnect their phones from the power supply once the battery is fully charged. Provision of phone charging facilities must be avoided from enclosed areas in long-distance train cars.
